Did you ever imagine what a Paper magazine sponsored Woodstock would like? We got our answer at the Design District last night. The publication partnered with Friends With You, AOL, and Tommy Hilfiger for a colorful, bombastic, oversized balloon sculptures, and lots of beers. Christian Louboutin checked out the party, while Miami’s prince Pharell Williams (and N.E.R.D) performed for the deliriously happy crowd.
…was my response to an email sent to me some months back from the “right hand of Bob”, Rich T, that Guided By Voices was planning a tour…but not just any tour, the original lineup tour: Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Greg Demos, Kevin Fennell & Mitch Mitchell. And on Sunday night at Terminal 5 in New York City, Guided By Voices would play the final sold out stop on that tour….And I was there to capture the magic in a live drawing.
“GUIDED BY VOICES” and “SOLD OUT” are not word groupings you see together every day. Robert Pollard is the Godfather of the underground rock music set, with a catalogue of original music and art that is truly staggering, but with zero concern for commercial inclinations. It is pure expression.
I first heard a GBV album in 1996 while attending art school…it was Alien Lanes, and it was life changing. For the first time, I felt a connection to music in a way I had never experienced through composition, and I observed a transference of that music to art, and art to music. In 2000, I would be asked to collaborate with this band for the first time. This show became the foundation of what would later become “Synthesis” in my own work.
GBV & Robert Pollard’s incarnations remain my all time favorite music material.
