Well, here’s a proof that not all artists are self-serious egomaniacs. Some of them actually took time to dress up for Halloween! There were plenty to go around at the Standard bash on Saturday night. Tom Sachs came as an elaborate mouse, which is our second favorite costume of his following his hand painted Snicker bar get-up in 2006. Aaron Young also impressed in the same bash as a crisp ringmaster, with Dustin Yellin and Vito Schnabel showed some color. As for Terence Koh? He hit two bashes over the weekend: V’s Halloween soiree on Saturday night and Lanvin’s extravaganza and didn’t disappoint with his signature white draping abilities.

Lovely, Looney Koons

Jeff Koons Studio Party

Forget the ultra, super duper VIP preview at the Basel. Nothing gets more exclusive than a Thomas Keller catered party at Jeff Koons‘ West 29th street studio.  The mega Chelsea star hosted the event to celebrate his collaboration with BMW, making him the 17th artist to join the illustrious list of Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, Alexander Calder, and the latest creative mind to receive a big check: Olafur Eliasson. Sure, Keller’s glittered macaroons were exquisite and this collaboration thing is nice and all but we were just happy to get a sneak peak at Koons’ exciting factory. Art Box and other recognizable faces like Klaus Biesenbach, Yvonne Force Villareal, Ingrid Sichy and Sandy Brant got to see plenty of Bettie Pages and Popeyes, all meticulously organized with color palettes for some of dozens of Koons land assistants.  The most colorful and striking image of Miss Page was almost ready to be shipped to a private buyer (perhaps one of the Russian collectors circling the room like an eagle) and the rest are due at Jeff’s next big show that may well be more than sixteen months away.  Until then, clear your walls. These canvases are not for amateurs.

Richard Phillips, Chris Phillips

The following 13 images are from a recent trip to Dallas where along with attending the 2×2 for Aids and Art gala benefiting Amfar, I had the occasion to visit some old paintings of mine in private homes and hotels around the city. It had been years since I’d visited Dallas and I was struck by the strength of the community in terms of both philanthropy and the support for the arts. Whether it was blasting past the glass towers in a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano or having the best BBQ imaginable at the Baby Back Shack on the south side, Dallas seemed like a concentration of focused energy that at once consolidates this huge state and simultaneously fires outward spreading its influence well beyond its borders. The millions and perhaps billions spent on their new cultural centers such as the Foster designed Windspear Opera house and the new Cowboys Stadium raise the stakes for shifting the centers of cultural capital. At the same time, an impromptu hip hop video is shot between the Nasher sculpture center and the Dallas Museum of art proving that amidst the conservation of inert objects that this city lives between, beyond and within is a capacity to contradict its facade with the Texan desire to go as big as possible no matter what!!!!

Today, we’re introducing a series in which some of our favorite artists share the photos and inspirational vignettes from their very visually stimulating lives. We’d love to welcome you to the world of Todd DiCiurcio. Here are his latest, stimulating finds.

Todd DiCiurcio (b. 1972, Pennsylvania) is an artist who lives and works in New York. His drawings and paintings are created within and respond to the corporeal context of the staged “live” performance and a special event. His sculptures address the exo-distortions inherent in the patterns of displacement and excess strewn across American Society.

His next exhibition will be held later this month at Confederacy in Hollywood and hosted by actor Ed Westwick.
