Seven Wonders of the New Museum World
Sometimes, we look at a great painting, we circle a giant sculpture, we listen to a concerto, and we marvel at the dedication it must have taken to create and the years of work it took to make it great. Now imagine someone being asked to accomplish that in one day. At AOL’s Seven on Seven event at the New Museum this past weekend, the company created an experiment that celebrated great minds. AOL paired seven artists with seven technologists and split them into teams of two. The teams were given a room, all and any tools they needed, one day, and the task to simply “create.” The results were quite amazing. Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr, delivered a keynote and then the rest was team magic. These were the hlighlights: Card Games Head of VURB, a think tank for urban computational systems, Ben Cerveny, and video and conceptual artist Liz “Magic Laser,” came up with a surrealist card game that brought out tension between responsive architecture and people. Supercut Mashups of popular songs are popular across the web. But what about mixes of videos? Andy Baio of Expert Labs, and Michael Bell-Smith, a music and animation artist created Supercut.org, which uses algorithms to precisely isolate every instance of a single video. The project serves as a sort of documentary of cultural phenomenon. Important People Bre Pettis, founder of Makerbot and NYCresistor, and Zach Lieberman, an open source programmer and hacker created something that seemed as though it was out of Star Wars. The pair spent the day shooting footage of strangers speaking about people important to them. Then, using facial tracking information from an XBox Kinect camera and Pettis' 3D-printing technology, the duo came up with an installation project that printed 3D videos of people speaking onto models of their own faces. Bring it Forward Kellan Elliott-McCrea of Etsy and Emily Roysdon, a New York and Stockholm-based artist, spent a lot of time talking about how they had nothing in common and hardship of the collaboration. After learning hilariously that they had a lot in common – same college, professors, lunch spots, and that they lived around the corner from each other – they came up with Bringitforward.com a site that allows users to “bring forward” events in history and decide their outcome in the context of 2011. Behin.de Two men with two interesting nicknames; Chris Poole, aka “moot,” founder of 4Chan and canvas, and Ricardo Cabello (aka “mr. doob”), a Barcelona-based artist and designer thought up Behin.de. After analyzing the social significance of comments on videos and website, Behin.de acted as a new layer of the internet, which allows users to enable inline commenting on videos and annotations on websites. The Beauty of Ephemerality Erica Sadun, noted iPhone app designer, and Camille Utterback, an interactive installation artist, discussed the beauty in things as they naturally disintegrate, and the idea that we will never again hold a faded photo, because computers keep all things fresh and new for eternity. The pair created a two part iPad app that takes layered faded photos, in which the photo brightness depends on whether you shake the iPad or hold it extremely still. Motion Controlled Music Jeri Ellsworth, noted game designer, and Rashaad Newsome, a New York-based video artist, created a machine that operated according to human touch an waves, which made music and videos using images and sound frequently seen and heard in pop music.
