Richard Phillips: Dallas Diary

The following 13 images are from a recent trip to Dallas where along with attending the 2x2 for Aids and Art gala benefiting Amfar, I had the occasion to visit some old paintings of mine in private homes and hotels around the city. It had been years since I'd visited Dallas and I was struck by the strength of the community in terms of both philanthropy and the support for the arts. Whether it was blasting past the glass towers in a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano or having the best BBQ imaginable at the Baby Back Shack on the south side, Dallas seemed like a concentration of focused energy that at once consolidates this huge state and simultaneously fires outward spreading its influence well beyond its borders. The millions and perhaps billions spent on their new cultural centers such as the Foster designed Windspear Opera house and the new Cowboys Stadium raise the stakes for shifting the centers of cultural capital. At the same time, an impromptu hip hop video is shot between the Nasher sculpture center and the Dallas Museum of art proving that amidst the conservation of inert objects that this city lives between, beyond and within is a capacity to contradict its facade with the Texan desire to go as big as possible no matter what!!!!
